1927: Mary, Her Lamb And HP Sauce...

We'll dart back to the 1920s now, where we find that Mary had a little lamb with lots of HP Sauce. Note Mary's little lamb on wheels! A very clever ad, and one of my favourites.

Did you know that the HP Sauce recipe was invented by Nottingham grocer  Frederick Gibson Garton in the 1890s? The name "HP" comes from the rumour that it was served in the Houses of Parliament.

What could be more soothing at the end of the day than a nice mug of Ovaltine?

Beecham's Pills

This 1929 newspaper advertisement for Beecham's Pills makes me smile. My grandmother often talked of an aunt of hers who was most possessive of her only daughter. Whenever this poor girl was due to go out to a dance, back in the '20s and '30s, her mother would always have a "bilious attack". Very convenient!

Not even Beecham's Pills relieved those attacks!
